Course Repeat Policy#
FlightPath can handle repeated courses in several different ways. The way repeated courses are evaluated is controlled by the Course repeat policy setting on the Configure School Settings form.
The available policies determine which attempt FlightPath uses when a student has taken the same course more than once.
Note: The course repeat policy applies to normal courses whose repeat hours are the same as their minimum hours. Courses that are specifically designed to be repeated are handled differently.
Most Recent, Exclude Previous Attempts#
This is the default FlightPath policy.
When a student takes a normal course more than once, FlightPath uses the most recent attempt and excludes previous attempts from consideration.
Previous attempts are placed into Excess Credits.
Previous attempts can still be used for substitutions.
Example: Passing Both Attempts#
Suppose a student takes ART 1001 twice:

FlightPath uses the C from the most recent attempt. The earlier B is ignored and placed into Excess Credits.
Example: Failing the Most Recent Attempt#
Suppose the student instead receives:

| Second attempt | F |
Because the most recent attempt is an F, FlightPath does not use either attempt toward the normal degree progress.
The previous B is still available for use in a substitution.
Most Recent, Do Not Exclude Previous Attempts#
This policy prefers the most recent attempt, but does not automatically exclude previous attempts.
For example:

FlightPath skips the failing most recent attempt and uses the previous B attempt.
This policy is less common than Most recent, exclude previous attempts on university campuses.
Best Grade, Exclude Other Attempts#
This policy uses the student’s best grade rather than automatically preferring the most recent attempt.
For example:

FlightPath uses the first attempt because the C is better than the later D.
Other attempts are ignored.
Choosing a Course Repeat Policy#
The appropriate policy depends on how your institution handles repeated courses.
Before selecting a policy, consider how your institution’s academic policies determine:
- Which attempt counts toward degree requirements.
- Which attempt is used when calculating progress.
- Whether previous attempts should be excluded when a course is repeated.
- Whether a failed repeat should replace a previously successful attempt.
- How repeated courses should be handled when they are used as substitutions.
Because the course repeat policy affects how student coursework is evaluated, it should be configured to match your institution’s academic policies.

Previous attempts that are excluded from normal degree requirements may still be available for substitutions.
If your institution has questions about which policy best matches its academic rules, review the behavior of each option with your advising and registrar teams before changing the setting.
