School settings tell FlightPath how to interpret, manage, and display information about your institution.
Access these settings from the Admin Console → Configure school settings.
If the Schools module is enabled, FlightPath can manage school-specific settings on this screen.
Note: The settings available in your FlightPath installation may vary depending on your version and the modules that are enabled. This page may not represent the complete set of School Settings.
| Setting | Description |

| School initials | The initials or short name FlightPath uses when referring to your institution. |
| School name | The full name of your institution as displayed to users. |
| Earliest catalog year | The earliest catalog year for which FlightPath has degree data. Students with an earlier catalog year will be shown a degree from this year with a warning that it may be inaccurate. |
| Graduate level course num | The course number above which FlightPath considers a course to be graduate-level. Common values are 500 or 5000. |
| Hiding grades message | The message displayed when grades are hidden, such as when students must complete an outside requirement before grades are released. |
Degree and What If Settings#
| Setting | Description |

| Show group titles on View and What If screens? | Controls whether group titles appear on the Degree and What If screens. Set to No for a tighter display or Yes for a friendlier display. |
| Maximum number of allowed selections in What If | Limits how many degree plans can be combined in What If. Higher limits can make the screen slower and more processor-intensive. |
| Show both undergraduate and graduate degrees for every student in What If? | Controls whether students can see degree plans from both undergraduate and graduate levels in What If. |
| Show level-3 degree options on What If selection screen? | Controls whether Level-3 degree plans, such as tracks and concentrations, appear as What If options. |
| What If mode default catalog year | Controls how FlightPath chooses the catalog year when a student changes majors, based on your institution’s policy. |
| Degree requirement sort policy | Controls how degree requirements are presented to students and faculty. Alphabetical sorting provides a clean, predictable display and is generally recommended. |
| Group requirement sort policy | Controls how courses in groups are sorted. |
| Setting | Description |

| Course repeat policy | Determines how FlightPath handles repeated normal courses. The common policy is to use only the most recent attempt and exclude previous attempts, but FlightPath supports other policies. |
| Ignore courses from hour counts (CSV) | Lists courses, separated by commas, that should not be included in FlightPath hour calculations. Examples include remedial or Freshman Seminar courses that do not count toward graduation hours. |
| Structure of term ID’s | Defines how FlightPath translates term IDs/term codes into readable terms. For example, 202810 might represent Fall 2028. |
| Substitution hours decimal places allowed | Determines how many decimal places FlightPath allows when breaking course hours into pieces during manual substitutions. If unsure, leave this at 2. |
| Auto-capitalize course titles? | Attempts to convert course titles into title case, which can help with all-caps or inconsistently capitalized titles, particularly transfer credits. |
| Auto-capitalize institution names? | Applies the same type of capitalization handling to outside/transfer institution names. |
| Restrict ghost substitutions to courses with zero hours only? | Controls whether substitutions involving zero-hour courses may be used only with other zero-hour courses. Setting this to Yes is the safest option. |
| Initial student course sort policy | Controls how FlightPath initially sorts a student’s courses. This can affect the order in which courses fill into a degree plan. Alphabetical sort can generally be left as the default. |
Subjects, Colleges, and Departments#
| Setting | Description |

| Subjects | Defines the plain-English title for each subject code and, optionally, the college code to which the subject belongs. For example: ACCT ~ BA ~ Accounting. |
| Colleges | Defines the title associated with each college code. |
| Degree Colleges | Specifies which college each degree plan belongs to. |
| Departments | Defines the title associated with each department code. |
These settings make course and academic information more understandable to users. For example, subject names are visible in areas such as Course Search.
| Setting | Description |

| Grade order (CSV) | Lists all possible grades from highest to lowest. Grades representing enrolled or in-progress courses should appear first because the final grade is not yet known. |
| Minimum passing grade | The grade that indicates a student has earned credit. |
| Retake grades (CSV) | Lists grades that indicate the student did not earn credit for a course, such as a failure or withdrawal. |
| Withdrew grades (CSV) | Lists grades that indicate the student withdrew from a course. |
| Enrolled grades (CSV) | Lists grades that indicate a course is currently enrolled/in progress. These courses are displayed with a green dot. |
| Minimum substitutable grade | The minimum grade that may normally be used for substitutions. This is usually the same as the Minimum passing grade. |
| Group requirement min grades (CSV) | Lists the grades available as minimum-grade options when editing an elective group in a degree plan. |
| Setting | Description |

| Calculate student cumulative hours and GPA? | Determines whether FlightPath calculates cumulative hours and GPA automatically or uses the GPA imported and stored in the database. Set to No when the imported GPA should be used. |
| Numeric to Letter Grade | Defines how numeric grades map to letter grades for institutions that use numeric grades. Leave blank when the institution uses letter grades. |
| Quality points and grades | Defines the quality points associated with each grade. Enter every possible grade, one per line, so FlightPath can calculate GPA correctly. |
Requirement and Degree Audit Display#
| Setting | Description |

| Requirement types and codes | Defines the one- or two-letter codes and descriptions used in degree data entry to identify requirement types. |
| Pie chart configuration | Defines the requirement types displayed in the degree pie charts, including the chart label and optional colors for incomplete and completed portions. Hex colors should not include #. |
| Should pie charts show GPAs? | Controls whether degree pie charts display GPA in addition to completed/required hours. |
| Developmentals semester block title | Sets the title of the semester block automatically created for remedial or developmental courses. |
| Developmentals notice text | Sets the text displayed underneath the Developmentals block. |
| Exclude major codes from “appears in” counts (CSV) | Lists major codes that should be excluded from “appears in” counts. This can reduce unnecessary styling when degree plans are frequently combined. Most schools can leave this blank. |
| Groups should be considered “full” when min hours are met or exceeded? | Determines whether a group with a range of required hours is considered full once the minimum number of hours has been assigned. |
| Setting | Description |

| Graduate level codes (CSV) | Lists codes that identify graduate-level courses, students, or degrees. GR is usually sufficient unless multiple codes are used. |
| Disallow automatic use of graduate credit? | Prevents graduate-level credit from automatically being used toward an undergraduate degree. This is enabled by default and is common institutional policy. |
| Display graduate credits in their own semester block? | Displays graduate credit earned by an undergraduate student in a separate semester block. This is generally recommended. |
| Graduate Credits block title | Sets the title of the separate graduate-credit block. |
| Graduate Credits block notice text | Sets the explanatory text displayed underneath the graduate-credit block. |
Advising and Degree Assignment Settings#
| Setting | Description |
|---|
| Remove an advised course when a student enrolls in it (or completes it) for the same term? | Controls whether an advised course is removed when the student subsequently enrolls in or completes it during the same term. Unless this situation occurs regularly at your institution, leaving this set to No is generally safe. |
| Prevent a course assignment to both a degree and its track(s)? | Prevents a course from being assigned to both a degree and its associated track(s). This should generally be left set to Yes. |
| Display ‘Repeat Information’ for a course in a group’s course list? | Displays repeat information for courses in group lists when specified repeats are configured. This should generally be left set to Yes. |
After reviewing the settings, save the form.
Because these settings affect how FlightPath interprets and displays institutional data, changes should be reviewed carefully before being made on a production system.
