Roles#
Roles determine what staff users are allowed to do in FlightPath.
A role is a collection of permissions. Instead of assigning individual permissions to each user, an administrator creates roles with the appropriate permissions and then assigns those roles to staff users.
For example, an institution might create roles such as:
- Advisor - permissions needed by academic advisors
- Data Coordinator - permissions needed by a higher-level user who will be editing degree and course data.
A staff user can have more than one role.
Creating a role#
From the Admin Console, select User Roles.
Enter the name of the new role in the Add new role field and select Add new.
The new role will then be available for assignment to staff users.
Creating a role does not automatically give the role any additional permissions. Permissions must be assigned separately.
Editing a role#
From the User Roles page, select the role you want to modify.
You can change the role’s name as needed.
To change what users with the role can do, modify the permissions assigned to the role from the Permissions page.
See Permissions for more information.
Assigning roles to users#
Roles are assigned to individual faculty/staff users from the user’s account.
To assign a role:
- Open the staff user’s account from the Users page.
- Locate the Roles section.
- Select the appropriate role.
- Save the user.
A staff user may have multiple roles. When a user has multiple roles, the user receives the permissions associated with those roles.
For more information, see Managing Users.
Students and roles#
Student users are automatically given the “Authenticated User” role, and cannot have additional roles assigned to them. To grant permissions to students, use the Authenticated User role.
Roles are intended for faculty & staff users who need additional capabilities in FlightPath.
Choosing roles#
When creating roles, it is generally best to give each role only the permissions required for the job it is intended to support.
For example, an institution might create separate roles for advisors and instructors rather than giving every staff member the same set of permissions.
This makes it easier to control access and reduces the possibility of giving a user permissions they do not need.
After creating a role, use the Permissions page to determine what that role can do.
